Built in 1840 by Harvey's of Hayle, the 27 inch winding engine hauled tin and copper ores from nearby Skip Shaft for 90 years until the great Levant mine closed in 1930. Although most of the plant was sold for scrap the winding engine was purchased and preserved by the Cornish Engine Preservation Society. In 1984 a group of volunteers (affectionately christened the 'Greasy Gang') started a restoration project which led to the engine steaming again in 1993 and continuing to do so to the present day.
There are guided routes around the extensive ruins that form the rest of the site; highlights include the remains of four other engine houses, including the famous 'man engine', the compressor house and a tunnel from the miners' 'dry' to the top of man engine shaft.
