Shirley Windmill 2024

Brick tower mill is 54ft (17m) high, with four sails and five working floors with two sets of millstones. There are several instructive models and displays on the ground floor, together with a continuously running video about windmills and their operation, so visitors who are unable to climb the stairs have plenty to interest them.

It was one of the last windmills to be built in this country, in 1854, and a fascinating piece of industrial archaeology. It ceased working in about 1890, but most of the original machinery, including its two pairs of millstones, is still in place, and has been restored.
