The oldest surviving smock mill in England; it is important with its unique timber machinery which is over 350 years old. The machinery probably dates from around 1650, making this the oldest smock windmill in the country. The windmill stands on the escarpment of the Chiltern Hills.

When the restoration began, the first part of the project was spent restoring the structure of the mill with the complicated operation of pulling the mill back to its proper shape. Christopher Wallis (whose father was Sir Barnes Neville Wallis – of the bouncing bomb, the R80 and R100 airships and the Wellington bomber etc.), had devised a method of holding the structure together with steel cables, and connecting another to a precise point, and then winching the twisted mill back to an upright position.

As the project progressed, it became evident that Christopher had managed to combine many talents. However, when it was completed everybody knew that without Christopher's vision and abilities, the whole project would never have begun. As the 'experts' had said it could NOT be preserved.
