Hessle Whiting Mill 2026

On Hessle foreshore, in the shadow of the north tower of the Humber Bridge, stands the mill tower on five levels, a unique example of an early 19th century whiting windmill. The mill forms part of the park’s Chalk Walk heritage trail. Inside the tower you can learn about the history of the mill, including how it worked, how whiting was made and who worked there.

Follow the Chalk Walk heritage trail to learn about the natural, industrial and social history of the Humber Bridge Country Park, a former chalk quarry that once supplied the whiting mill with chalk, known locally as Little Switzerland. The trail follows a path through the oldest area of the quarry and onto the Humber Foreshore, continuing on five levels inside the mill's tower.

The distinctive bright white chalk cliffs were said to resemble the snow covered Alps, which surround the park on three sides.
