The collection was founded in 1973 and includes exhibits covering civil and military aviation, past and present. A number of cockpit sections are included.

A number of cockpit sections are in the collection, including English Electric Lightning F3 (XP701), Sea Vixen, Canberra (WE173), Hunter, Meteor T7 (WA630) and Tiger Moth (G-AIV W).  There are a large number of aircraft engines in the collection, including Merlin, Jumo, Conway, Derwent and many others, a total of 28.  There is also a rear turret from a Lancaster.  On a smaller scale, there are uniforms, maps, photographs, documents radios and many components from a great many aircraft and associated items.  The museum also has over 5,000 original photographs of many different aircraft.  A permanent exhibition has been opened at Newhaven Fort.
