Penderyn Quarry Line 2025

The line dates from the mid-1780s when a horse-drawn tramway was built on a gentle gradient. The horses hauled trams from the quarry to the blast furnaces at Hirwaun ironworks. In 1904, steam and later diesel locomotives replaced horses.

This linear route follows the former Penderyn Quarry Line which transported minerals from Moel Penderyn to the Hirwaun Ironworks.

The now tranquil route, was once a hive of activity with tonnes of limestone and silica rock transported through the Penderyn and Hirwaun countryside.

The two mile route departs from Penderyn village, home to the Penderyn Whisky Distillery (a must visit) and follows the old quarry line alongside the River Cynon to Hirwaun before finishing at the Ironworks.
