Welsh Coal Mining Experience – Rhondda Heritage Park 2024
Rhondda Cynon Taff
The line dates from the mid-1780s when a horse-drawn tramway was built on a gentle gradient. The horses hauled trams from the quarry to the blast furnaces at Hirwaun ironworks. Coal, iron ore and limestone were the key ingredients in iron making – all found locally. In 1904, steam and later diesel locomotives replaced horses.
