The mill’s history dates as far back as the Viking Age, where the Norsemen likely began milling ‘Bere’, an ancient form of barley. In 1750, the Houston family acquired the site, and operated the mill until 2001, when the last miller passed away. The mill is now owned and operated by a Charitable Trust.

The attraction is just a stones throw from the iconic John O’Groats signpost. Now the last working watermill in Caithness.
