The railway follows the original main line between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth and once formed part of a continuous link between North and South Wales, passing through picturesque farmland and steeply wooded hillsides.

A restored section of the Carmarthern – Aberystwyth railway, the Gwili Railway currently operates over 2.5 miles from Bronwydd – Danycoed, with a two mile extension to Carmarthen (Abergwili) currently under construction, and further extensions northwards planned (the railway owns eight miles of trackbed, as far as Llanpumsaint).
