The story of Bollington, from an agricultural backwater in the Macclesfield Forest, to the realisation of the use of its streams and rivers to power the cotton mills that made the town what it is today. King cotton may have gone but fortunately several of the mills survive, finding new and valuable uses in the modern era.
Clarence Mill was the first in Bollington to be built for steam power, and to be built away from the river. It stands proudly on the hillside overlooking much of the town. It was built here for just one good reason, the canal.
