Anderton Boat Lift & Visitor Centre 2025

It was built in 1875 and has earned its nickname 'Cathedral of the Canals' for a very good reason. Not only does it still do the job it was designed to do of lifting boats and barges the 50ft from the River Weaver to the Trent & Mersey Canal, but it does it with the most ingenious and endearing character of any structure on the canal system. Celebrating its 150th Anniversay this year.

It is one of the 'Seven Wonders of the Waterways' and together with its low level visitor centre that houses an exhibition, looking at the lift’s history and the people who worked on and around it. There are lots of interactive, hands-on elements and there is a cinematic centrepiece. You can even see the lift control centre where you can watch all the busy goings on during its daily schedule.
