The building formed part of a line of ‘Pill Box’ emplacements forming ‘Stop Line Green’ to defend Bristol and its aircraft factories and docks from a threatened invasion from the south-west. As a pillbox, the building was part of Bristol's outer defences against a wartime invasion. It was unique since it doubled up as a platform for an anti-aircraft gun mounted on the roof.

Bonds Mill once housed the Sperry Gyroscope Factory. After the war it was adapted for use as a gatehouse for the mill and lateer to include hydraulic controls for the bridge that crosses the canal.
