Axminster Heritage Centre 2024

The story of Axminster and the world famous carpets of Thomas Whitty who started his business in 1755. On display is a stunning 1769 Whitty carpet, an original 18th century loom that was used by him. There is also a 1930s Crabtree loom used in the more modern factory of Harry Dutfield, which he established in 1937. At the rear is the Dye House and garden with plants that would have been used for dying the wool in Thomas Whitty's day. Over the years the town attracted a foundry and two brush factories, both famous for their toothbrushes.
