Bus deregulation in the Midlands followed the national trend of a ‘free market’ approach that led to service consolidation and, ironically, a long-term decline in passenger numbers. The West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive had to separate its operations into a private company, West Midlands Travel (Todays National Express West Midlands). Private operators also came in and set their own fares and routes, which led to bus wars. We’ll sample some of the vehicles that ran in this period.
