The signal box was built around 1865 and is a working museum which gives an insight into the life of a railway signalman. Visitors of all ages can get a ‘hands on’ experience by operating points, clearing signals and ringing bells to control a simulation of trains passing through Romsey.

On the site there are also two pavilions containing various exhibits relating to railway signalling equipment. Elsewhere there is a miniature lever frame with full size instruments which is based on the signal box at Cowley Bridge Junction, just outside Exeter. On Open Days this can often be seen being operated by a trained signalman (subject to available volunteers).
