Curently the only public, steam working 9 1/2 inch gauge railway in the UK, Lakeshore Railroad was first opened in 1972. Running for just under a third of a mile round the boating lake, the tracks meander through the trees and over the level crossings before arriving back at the station.

Travel

By Rail: South Shields / 0.75 miles

Established in 1972, the line runs around the boating lake in the South Marine Park. Parking is available nearby and there are toilets and a cafe in the park, together with a children's playground. Trains run from around 11.30 to 5.00, longer in the summer season. Please be aware that operation can be curtailled in bad weather.
