One of a number of Forts built in the 1850s and 1860s to protect Portsmouth and its vital harbour against a French invasion. Largely unaltered, the keep, the parade ground, gun ramps, moated keep, washrooms and armoury can all be viewed.

The exterior of the Fort is open at reasonable daylight hours all year round, a circular walk around the moat and into woodland gives views of the moat, the back of the Fort and its defences.
