The railway is set in the heart of a World Heritage Site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. At over 1,300ft above sea level the Whistle Inn Halt is the highest station in England and Wales. The line has extremely steep gradients up to 1 in 29 which requires the industrial locomotives used to work very hard.
