The only comprehensive guide to Britain's transport and industrial heritage
One of the largest collections of Industrial locomotives and rolling stock in the country housed in purpose built workshop and museum, complete with a running line that gives a scenic three mile return trip across the docklands and alongside the River Ribble.
The railway is a family day out in the heart of Lancashire. The railway has been open to the public since September 2005. A visit to the site will not only give you the opportunity to travel along our 1½ mile dock and riverside line, but also access our newly built museum and workshop.
The line itself crosses the Preston Marina entrance via a swing bridge, and runs alongside the diverted River Ribble on the site of the former sprawling docklands.
Trains leave on the hour from the museum Platform (Preston Riverside) for the 3 mile round trip.
Our first train of the day is at 11am and the last at 4pm, total journey time around 35 minutes.
The end of the line is adjacent to Strand Road Crossing where Ribble Rail is connected to the national network. The journey (unless a push-pull service is in operation) includes a run-round by the locomotive of the day at Odeon Sidings.
The railway is run entirely by volunteers and you can visit the workshops to see out latest projects, learn about the History of Preston Dock and follow the Mr Ribble Trail around the museum building whilst learning about Engines & Railways.
Our museum building is continually being updated and improved to give visitors a truly interactive look into the fascinating industrial railway history of the North West of England.
Light refreshments are available in our tea room.
(*also on our buffet car on the train during special events)
Our gift shop carries a wide range of merchandise including railway dvd's, books, postcards and a large selection of souvenirs to please even the youngest of visitors.
There is ample free car parking adjacent to the Railway Centre entrance, including disabled parking spaces right outside the doors.
As always the Price includes admission to the main museum, the workshops and unlimited train rides on the day of purchase.
