Kirklees Light Railway

< Back to previous page

Opened in 1991 the Kirklees Light Railway runs along the former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways Clayton West Branchline. The narrow gauge trains run for 3.5 miles through the scenic South Pennine foothills between Clayton West and Shelley. On this journey the train runs along high embankments, through historic woodlands, deep cuttings and Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel - the longest tunnel on a narrow gauge railway in Britain. Where possible trains are hauled by specially constructed steam locomotives which are based on historic narrow gauge locomotives that were built in Britain and exported all over the world.
